HUM Insider | Angelica Poversky

HUM Insider will be a series of blog posts where I will interview the many people behind HUM. This is your chance to get to know our incredibly diverse and magnificent team and maybe even see your friends’ (or your own) embarrassing interviews so you can laugh at them forever. Either way, we don’t judge.
This edition features the poetic, majestic and elastic Angelica Poversky! This youth phenom contributes for HUM in all manners of things: organizing events, performing her poetry, helping with marketing, and that is just to name a few. In her own time, Angelica is a self-professed lover of the outdoors, constant participant at poetry slams and is generally a pretty fun person to be around. Take look at our interview (Alvin from the Wishbone helped out)
Daniel: Why did you get involved with HUM?
Angelica: It wasn’t really my choice per say. I met Steven after Arts in the Park and he said, “Hey you’re pretty cool. You should join us.” After that I went to a meeting, got involved, and since then it has been good!
Daniel: What is your favourite part of being with HUM?
Angelica: I really enjoy organizing events and bringing people together. Things like being a part of LipSync, meeting new people and interacting with this larger community is just a lot of fun for me.
Alvin: What has been your most memorable moment?
Angelica: Hmmmm, my most memorable moment… Let me reflect for a second.

Daniel: The sunglasses at LipSync were pretty awesome.
Angelica: Oh yeah! Daniel and I were MCing the LipSync concert and I talked about the ancient Egyptian ritual of putting on sunglasses while running an event. It was pretty comedic if I say so myself. But honestly, all of my experiences with HUM have been good.

Daniel: Everything is awesome?
Angelica: Yeah, everything is cool when you’re part of a team.

Daniel: What are you aspirations or goals for HUM in the future?
Angelica: I’m really looking forward to the outdoors concert I’m organizing. And also for TEDx talk. Just seeing HUM get bigger, more people joining and Alvin being more awesome. My life goal is actually to just be Alvin.
Alvin: Why don’t we talk about your poetry!
Angelica: Well I got into poetry back when I was three. There was this poem-

Daniel: You have to say the poem. Please remember the poem.
Angelica: I actually remember it: “I’m going to Kindergarten soon, with a big balloon.”
“Many cheers”

Angelica: That’s imagery, alliteration, rhymes and deep ideas all in one.

Daniel: This poem has to make the final draft.
Angelica: Honestly, until grade 5, I didn’t think I could get big in poetry.

Daniel: Look at you now! You’re in Arts in the Park, performing at all sorts of venues, your poetry is a thing now!
Angelica: Yeah! I did this competition in grade 5 and ever since then I’ve found more people who are into poetry and now it’s become a huge part of my life. And my poems have improved since my 3 year old days. One of the most interesting things about poetry for me is the spoken element. There’s just this feel to it that can’t be replicated any other way.

Daniel: So what are your summer plans?
Angelica: Obviously to date a lot of grade 9 boys.

Daniel: That’s going up on the post. Just saying.
Angelica: I’m also organizing a bunch of events, doing some performing and just do outdoor activities in general.

Daniel: Sounds like a lot of fun! It’s going to be a bright future for you. Any last points for my readers out there?
Angelica: Keep lovin’, keep swingin’ and keep bein’.
